Unearthed, since 2001, near the northern sanctuary at the highest point of the limescale plateau of Paestum, an extremely rich set of items – mainly ceramics and metals – bears witness to the importance of the worship of Athena even later than 500 BC.
The weapons – offered to the goddess to celebrate military victories or document the devotion of individual citizens and communities – point to original and unheard events of the Athenaion sanctuary between the 6th and 4th/3rd century BC, adding depth to the history of an archetype of ancient Western civilisation.
