…Take part in the unique opportunity of reconstructing the history of a great magna graecia city
For many years, thick vegetation concealed an important link to the past of Poseidonia: nobody would have imagined the existence of a fourth and so well-preserved Doric temple within the city walls.
The fortuitous discovery took place during the extraordinary works for cleaning the ancient walls: the farmers’ ploughs had piled a significant amount of rubble against the large blocks, from which parts of columns, capitals, cornices, metopes and triglyphs emerged. These architectural elements are about much more than what they seem: they are part of a place of worship located outside the district of the urban Sanctuaries.
The finding challenged the established history of Poseidonia until then. Archaeologists are now asking many questions: what did the temple look like, what deity was it dedicated to, what rites were performed there and who used it, and, also, was there only a temple or were there other buildings in this part of the city? At the moment it is not possible to answer these questions, and only archaeological excavations will be able to broaden knowledge of this structure.
If the excavation and analysis of the archaeological materials does not start soon, extremely important data for the history of the city of Poseidonia-Paestum will be lost. To prevent the temple from being engulfed by oblivion once again, we also ask for the support of private donors so as to bring back to light the history and splendour of ancient Magna Graecia.
Supporting the recovery of the unknown parts of the temple with a donation means taking part in time travel taking us more than 2500 years back, to the very foundations of the fourth temple of Paestum and the heart of Greek culture and civilisation.
For companies, a donation will contribute to improving, strengthening and boosting their image and will leave an indelible mark of their commitment to safeguarding the future and preserving the world’s cultural heritage.
